Letting Go of Others’ Expectations

People have opinions like they have armpits – some smell sweet and some stinky.

And people love to share them. Opinions, not armpits (thankfully).

However, just because someone tells you their opinion – sweet or stinky – doesn’t mean it’s really something you should consider.

Let’s break it down a bit. An opinion is actually a judgment. When a person decides you should do something or not do it, they are judging where you’ve come from, where you are in your life, who you are, and what you are about to do. They are drawing their conclusion – opinion – based on their own perspective of your situation.

The other problem with judging is that people see that perspective based on their own lives. So, for instance, if you say you would like to give up your job in the law profession to start a career in singing / songwriting (like Chris Assaad did), the people around you are going to share their “opinion” based on whether or not THEY could give up being a lawyer to try to pursue singing. A small percentage of their opinion is actually based on you, your needs and wants, and what will make you happy. Again, it’s all from their perspective.

But let’s be real – how many times have both you and I sucuummed to the opinions of others and jumped full force into what they expected of us?

We bought it. Hook. Line. And Sinker.

We caved.

We gave in.

We let them talk us into it.

Or out of it…

We let them and their opinion run our lives.

Fast forward 2, 5, 10 years and where are you now? Living out others’ expectations of you and not listening to your calling, passions, or purpose, in most cases. You may even be unhappy, frustrated, or even worse, miserable. Yet, you keep going through the motions because you don’t know any different or have listened to everyone else around you for so long that you have forgotten what your own voice sounds like. You have forgotten to stop and evaluate, to listen, to learn. You have let their expectations grow and grow so high that you worry about their feelings far more than your own happiness or reaching your own vision and dreams for your life.

For some, they don’t even dream anymore. They merely exist. It’s sad.

If you are fortunate enough to hear that still, small voice, to see the light, to catch the glimpses of visions, to know that you know that you know there is more for you, you will come to realize first – there is no way to live up to everyone’s expectations (“You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.”) and second – the vision and life you are called to is greater than anything anyone else could ever give you, plan for you, or push you into.

You are called to more.

You are not made for a mediocre life.

You were made to thrive, excel, and shine brighter than the sun!

I feel like I’m preaching to the choir, but that’s only because as I work through this, too, I knew you must feel this in your life, as well. It’s time we all broke away from the molds that everyone else is placing us in and live outside the box. Are you ready to leave others’ expectations behind? Have you already begun your journey? If you feel so tied to expectations placed on you, what’s keeping you so connected? What are you concerned about if you let go to grow? Please share in the comments below. I read every single one of them! I love hearing the story of you!!

Letting Go of Others’ Expectations

Trust Where God Has You

When we seek to learn the most we can from what’s in front of us, the more insight we are given for the next stage of life. (tweet this!)

I’ve noticed this a lot in my life over the past year and a half. When I really try to enjoy and seek out the answers that are being given to me in my “now,” all of a sudden, something of even greater worth (information, ideas, innovations, etc.) seem to just flood in.

Once I start focusing on those and getting what I can out of them, even more comes rushing into my head.

When I start to feel overwhelmed by God’s grace and goodness to me in showing me these cool things, I tend to take a step back to see the larger picture.

Without fail, every time, in every thing He leads me to next, something MUST have come before it.

A video.

A note.

An idea.

A thought.

Something. Something that gets my mind and creativity going. Something that speaks to me in some way.

I realized what He’s doing is laying a foundation. He’s giving me bits and pieces of things to learn at a time which will inevitably have something built on it down the road.

When I pick up books now, I find a familiar thread in them… something I’ve heard or seen before.

When I listen to a new video or audio, or even read a blog post, there is a silver lining that runs through it that I have been exposed to before. It may not all be that way, but it seems to be happening more and more.

I’ve learned that the silver lining has had to come to me in a certain order, in stages, for me to be open to receiving more. Once I “get it” at one level, He reveals the next, and then the next, and then the next.

Amazing.

What an incredible God we serve. Not only is He leading us, but He really wants us to get it, grasp hold of it, and dive deep into His purpose for us.

We merely need to show up to be of service and to learn as much as we can. (tweet this, too!)

When we are open to all He has to offer, He keeps offering more and more. It’s truly incredible to witness and experience.

I encourage you today to seek what He’s trying to teach you at this stage in your life. What can you learn? What can you seek more information on that will help in lots of areas of your life? How can you alter your attitude to reflect one of gratitude and willingness to enjoy this stage of your life? Share your thoughts. I love reading them!

Trust Where God Has You

What You Need May Be Right in Front of You

I must start this post by saying just how outrageously cool it is that God directs us to the exact information we need at the time that we need it.

And even when we aren’t necessarily looking for it!

I cannot begin to tell you how many times, over the past month or so, that I’ve been led to new people, blogs, videos, etc., that have either given me the info I need to move forward toward the vision God’s given me or led me to someone else that has the answer.

Awesome.

That leads me to that interesting word – coincidence.

Dictionary.com defines it like this…

coincidence [koh-in-si-duh ns]
noun
- a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance

Some people believe in coincidences and some people don’t. Those that don’t believe that everything is planned. Nothing is by chance. It’s all planned out for teaching us, leading us, and guiding us in the right direction.

What do you think?

Do you believe in chance things happening or when the same thing shows up in your life over and over, do you believe it was put across your path on purpose, for a specific reason?

Personally, I’m believing less and less in coincidences and more and more in a God who knows even the little things we do and directs people, situations, and information across our path to teach us, lead us, and show us exactly what we need when we need it.

And even to prove His point sometimes, He tends to bring the same topics or people in front of me multiple times – maybe because He knew I may blow it off the first or second time. I’m starting to learn to listen and pay very close attention the first time something or someone shows up in my life that has answers to problems or questions I’ve had.

It’s not coincidence. It’s a plan. It’s God’s plan. It’s Him speaking to me through others. It’s him directing me to my purpose.

Don’t be so quick to look past, glance over, or ignore even the little “coincidences” that appear in front of you. They may just be your Heavenly Father showing you the way to go.

What do you think? What’s been your take in the past on coincidences? Do you blow them off as chance or do you consider what you can learn from that person or information falling into your lap at that particular time? Share how “coincidences” have affected your life in the comments below. I love reading your stories!

What You Need May Be Right in Front of You

Find Your Vision, Purpose, and Passion

I opened my e-mail today and there was Proverbs 29:18 staring me in the face – “Where there is no vision, the people perish…

Wow.

That sums up my life in a nutshell over the last month and a half.

Honestly, I believe part of me was in that perishing realm because I’ve been fighting and stuggling so hard on my own. I thought I was going about things just a bit wrong and that’s why things have felt “off” – or maybe I just haven’t stuck it out long enough – or perhaps I need to just learn a bit more and it will all start to click.

All of these thoughts played over and over in my head until I started questioning everything.

Then I made a change.

Almost 2 years ago, I started on a journey of personal development. I didn’t realize that’s what it was at the time because I wasn’t really seeking it. I was more interested in developing my business skills, which of course, falls under the “personal development” umbrella. However, I wasn’t focused on intentionally bettering ME until I noticed it was ME who was benefiting the most.

I began reading every book I could that was suggested from people and mentors I trusted. I watched videos. I listened to audios. I absorbed. I soaked. I applied. And I changed.

Here’s the #1 tip I can give you today for getting to the real, deep down vision and purpose for your life…

Do the work of bettering yourself by dealing with your crap – and when I say crap, I mean the junk that’s festering in the lowest parts of your soul that needs to be unearthed, dislodged, and chucked to the wind, never to be seen again – and you need to fill that hole with new skills, new loving attitudes, new acceptance of others, new trust that God has your back, new belief that He will lead you, new faith that you were born for more, and relying on Him to show you what that is as you press for more growth, truth, and being genuine.

I have been “doing the work” on myself, like I said, for going on almost 2 years… like REALLY working on myself. Not this, “oh, I’ll just read through this book and see what sounds good.” No, I have cried as I have read, written in a journal in answer to questions posed in books, and actually written out plans of change.

Better change.

Growth.

I have remained open, calm, and trusting through some fairly crazy and unbelievable issues in my life because I had nothing better to do. What’s better than staying calm, not freaking out, and trusting that everything will be ok? What’s the alternative? Freaking out, doing things your own way, taking the reins of your life, and potentially making an even bigger mess. Uhh, no thank you.

When you find this sweet spot of life (and it’s not always easy), you realize that you aren’t your crazy thoughts. There is more truth about you that you have yet to step into. You realize that God can make something better from a burned down house, a marriage torn apart, a lost job, or whatever happens to be your life story. Deep down you know that all things work together for the good of those that love God and are called according to HIS purpose.

We may not have all the answers, however, it sure does put me in a state of awe when it’s in the moment that we CHOOSE to remain in the sweet spot, trusting God, and focusing on making ourselves better that we meet God in a whole new place. It’s where visions are given, passion comes to life, and the once numb, burnt out, depressed, and apathetic morsels of our lives spark again and burst into flame!

It’s where life has meaning again.

It’s where contentment and joy can be found.

It’s where peace lives.

It’s where dreams are not just made, but lived.

It’s after we have put in the work of getting through our messes that we are able to receive more – receive visions, our purpose, God’s plan for us, rekindle passions we once had or even gain new ones, etc.

I love this quote I heard recently that touched my heart in the area of vision… “Those who know the outcome can afford to wait and wait without anxiety.”

Trust without hesitation. Give without abandon. Love without reservation.

Isn’t that how God wants us to live? Trusting Him. Believing in the vision He’s placed in our hearts. And seeing it through by us showing up every day for our part to play.

If you are feeling like you are floundering, have yet to find your way, passion, or purpose, I challenge you with this – when’s the last time you looked deep, really deep, and dug out the negative, critical, judgmental, controlling, self-righteous, egotistical parts of you and let love, compassion, passion, creativity, peace, and joy fill their slots? Have you begun that journey yet? Have you found your passion and see a vision for your future? I don’t know about you, but mine EXCITES ME!! Share in the comments below. I love hearing from you!

Find Your Vision, Purpose, and Passion

Gratitude Opens Doors

There’s a shift in the wind. A changing tide.

The winds are blowing and there is greatness on the edges of the breeze.

Can you feel it?

I can. And so many people I’ve talked to lately are in a similar place in their lives.

Very interesting.

I have felt lost for awhile. Actually, a very long while. I’ve felt like I’m struggling and striving. I’m learning and implementing, however, something’s still missing.

I have felt like I’ve been missing it – missing something critical – maybe even my purpose.

Sure, I’ve helped people. My knowledge and skills have helped plenty of others. However, I haven’t felt like I’ve yet landed on doing what I’ve been put on this planet to do.

And then… something amazing happened! But let me take a step backwards for a minute…

When I don’t know where to go or what to do, when I feel like I need answers, I decide to become thankful. When I focus on what I DO have and what I can find contentment in that I currently have in my life, it shifts my perspective and gives me a new outlook on my life.

Even more fascinating than that, it’s given me answers. It’s filled in the gaps. New ideas are flowing – innovative ideas – straight from Heaven.

I haven’t even fully stepped into them yet and it’s already exciting!!

When we learn to work with what we have and be thankful for what we’ve been given and focus on being and doing our best, we are somehow, by the grace of God, propelled into something even better than we could have imagined.

If you have never kept a Gratitude Journal, I suggest you start one TODAY! You will be surprised by what you write, what comes flowing out of you, and what you learn about yourself.

I encourage you to come up with at least 5 things to be thankful for from each day.

Personally, I write in mine each evening because the day is fresh in my mind and it frees up my mind and opens my heart for my evening prayer before bed to receive directly from Heaven.

We are creative beings – created and made to create – the flow of creativity works like a river. It flows.

When you write in your Gratitude Journal, you are releasing not just thankfulness, but part of your heart. When you allow things to flow out, that’s when you are free to be filled again. We are made to operate like a river – the current flows in and flows out just to have more flow in again. I believe this applies to our attitude of gratefulness, too. Being thankful opens our hearts and lives to receive more.

Give it a try. Be thankful. Learn about yourself. Find contentment. Make it a daily practice - your lifestyle!

Do you already keep a Gratitude Journal? How often do you write in it? Have you noticed a difference in your life and attitude since you started writing in it? If you don’t have one, are you going out to get one… today (hint, hint!)? All it takes is a simple notebook – no need to get a fancy journal or spend loads of money. Just get one and start writing! Share with me in the comments below how it’s going for you.
